Indian Railways’ Bold Move Towards Solar Energy

Indian Railways' Bold Move Towards Solar Energy

The Indian Railway is the heart of our nation. This is not only to make travelling easier but also to help India achieve its net-zero emission goals by 2030. The Indian Railway utilizes solar and wind energy to adopt renewable energy sources, powering the railway station and its associated facilities.

As per the source, 2249 railway stations in India have solar system installations. Rajasthan, Mumbai, and West Bengal are among the top states that have adopted these changes. The Indian Railway consistently works to achieve its net-zero goal and adopt green energy.

India’s ‘jugad’ mindset has yet again brought a new wave of innovation in the solar sector through the first removable solar panel system between the railway tracks at Varanasi.

On 15 August 2025, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) ran a pilot initiative of installing a removable solar panel system between the tracks at Varanasi station, Uttar Pradesh.

About BLW’s First Removable Solar Panel System Between Tracks

On the 79th Independence Day, India marked its innovative growth with this unique and historic solar pilot project. Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) operated India’s first ‘between the rail tracks’ solar system.

This pilot project of a removable solar project was spread across 70 meters at the Varanasi Station. The project included 28 panels with 15KWp capacity and 20% efficiency. All the solar panels were developed in India, making this project more significant.

The ‘removable solar panel system between tracks’ pilot project has dual benefits: generating energy and repurposing the track space, especially unused ones. Therefore, through this project, India generates more renewable energy without any significant infrastructural alteration.

The removable solar panel project on the railway track uses high-quality solar panels, durable epoxy adhesive, and vibration-resistant rubber pads. Therefore, it can withstand the fast train movement without any mishaps. Furthermore, the removable technology makes it easier to clean and manage these solar panels to maintain their efficiency.

Benefits Of The Removable Solar Panel System Between Tracks

BLW’s removable solar panel system between the rail tracks will generate 60 units of electricity per day. This means it can power up the railway station facilities, offices, or local signals to efficiently manage the railway traffic.

It also utilizes the space covered by the railway track. Therefore, there is no need for any additional land to be used to create solar parks. This also overcomes the infrastructural challenges of adopting solar power to achieve the net-zero emission target by 2030.

Indian Railway has been at the forefront of adopting sustainable technologies, such as rooftop solar on stations, and bio-waste production through trains. This pilot project is yet another step towards green transport solutions and safeguarding the nation’s natural resources.
